Could Indiana's Latimer be a 1st-round pick?

Cody Latimer (USA Today)

Indiana WR Cody Latimer has flown up draft boards in recent weeks. Where will he land?

Before his pro day and the NFL Combine, Indiana wide receiver Cody Latimer was projected as a fourth or fifth-round pick. Maybe third round at the highest.

But as the weeks have gone by, Latimer has climbed up the draft boards at a pretty alarming rate. There's still a wide range in projections for him, but some are very promising.

Latimer had an outstanding pro day on which he ran a 4.38 40-yard dash. At the Combine, he completed more bench press reps than any other wide receiver.

ESPN's Todd McShay, one of the most respected NFL Draft experts, has Latimer at No. 23 overall in the first round. That's an incredible jump, and would mean Latimer's pro day made him a significant amount of money.

"[Latimer] does a great job of getting off the press, has extremely reliable hands and is a threat after the catch -- three things that make him a perfect fit for a West Coast-style offense," McShay wrote. "He is dealing with a foot injury but his healing is ahead of schedule, and he recently ran in the 4.4-range at 6-foot-2, 215 pounds."

McShay is the only expert I've seen put Latimer in the first round, but it shouldn't be ignored. Latimer has still been graded as a fourth-round talent, but I doubt he goes that low.

As the draft gets closer, we will have more updates on Latimer and other IU hopefuls.
