Tim Dwight was obtained via a trade with the Atlanta Falcons on the eve of the 2001 NFL Draft. After his arrival the Chargers rewarded Dwight with a 5 year, $15 million dollar contract during the 2002 offseason. He was a key part of the trade that sent the number one overall pick to the Falcons (Michael Vick) for the 5th overall pick (LaDainian Tomlinson), Dwight, a third rounder in 2001 (Tay Cody) and a 2nd rounder in 2002 (Reche Caldwell).

He enters the season as the No. 2 receiver for the Bolts and has been relieved of his punt return duties so he can stay healthy over a full season. Midway through the season he resumed the duites of punt returning as Tamarick Vanover was relieved. He ended the season with 50 receptions for 623 yards (194 YAC) and two touchdowns. He also added 12 rushes fopr 108 yards with one rushing touchdown. On punt returns he averaged 12.2 yards per return on 19 returns.
2001
Caught 25 passes for 406 yards in 2001 before being injured with a collapsed lung. He was named AFC Special Teams Player of Week after registering 84-yard punt return for touchdown vs. Redskins Sept. 9.
He became the only player in the NFL to return a punt for a touchdown in each of the last three seasons and a punt or kickoff for a touchdown in each of the last four seasons.
