| Smith joined the Chargers as an assistant general manager in 2001. He was named general manager on April 22, 2003 following the death of John Butler.
Chargers Career
Smith has earned a reputation as a shrewd dealer, earning him Executive of the Year honors following the 2004 season.
The move that defined his career was trading the rights to Eli Manning for a package which developed into Philip Rivers, Shawne Merriman, Nate Kaeding and Roman Oben.
Smith also has a knack for taking chances on draft day. He spent first-round picks on Luis Castillo (following a positive steroids test) and Antonio Cromartie (coming off a serious knee injury).
Smith prefers to build through the draft and believes in extending his own players, leading to a strong sense of continuity during his time in charge.
