| Biography: |
Jesse Chatman was signed as a rookie free agent from Eastern Washington prior to the 2002 season.
NFL
In 2003, Chatman had to again sit behind one of the best backs in the league and made his name on special teams instead. He led the team in special teams tackles.
After a strong preseason to make the team with inspirational play he did not get much of an opportunity to show what he could do in the 2002 regular season. He ended the year with just 6 carries for 19 yards and 3 receptions for 44 yards.
Scouting Report
Chargers Insiders staff had Chatman tabbed as a 7th round draft choice. Powerful and aggressive carrying the ball, keeps his feet moving forward, breaking tackles and picking up a lot of yardage off initial contact. Keeps his shoulders square to pick up the extra yardage and is always falling forward. Not elusive and although he is built like a fullback his abilities and production carrying the ball precluded him from ever being asked to block in college. May eventually be a fullback if he can learn to block well. Was the feel good stroy of camp. Played in a few preseason games and seperated himself from the pack to earn a spot on the team. Hustled and found a way to get past initial contact to gain the tough yards. Originally in preseason there were thoughts that another back might be brought in to backup Tomlinson but he erased any doubts that he could carry the load.
College
Big Sky Offensive Player of the Year after leading all Division I-AA in rushing last season with 285 carries for 2,096 yards and 24 touchdowns. He also registering 38 catches for 424 with 4 touchdowns catching the ball. He finished his career with 4,173 yards and 53 touchdowns.
