Miami quarterback Ray Lucas led his team to points on each of its opening four possessions.
McNeil Fractures Arm, Has Surgery
McNeil, who went to his first Pro Bowl last season after leading the team with eight interceptions, said he was uncertain when he would return. He also said he was uncertain whether the arm was broken.
"We've got to get a further evaluation," he said. "I don't think the pictures were clear. No matter what, I'm upbeat. I'm positive that I will be back soon. I'm a fast healer."
Rookie Quentin Jammer took over for McNeil in the base defense with Davis Sanchez taking over for Jammer in the nickel package. He was credited with five tackles and no passes defensed, although the Dolphins attempted just 23 passes.
"As much potential as Quentin Jammer has, he is still a rookie," safety Rodney Harrison said. "The NFL is about matchups, and the offense is going to try and create as many mismatches as possible. If they smell blood, they are going to attack it. If they see a weak link, they are going to go after it."
"I started off bad, but I think I finished OK," said Jammer, who was beaten for a 20-yard touchdown by wide receiver James McKnight late in the first quarter. "On the touchdown, I just didn't look back. But I thought I did all right after that."
McNeil, according to team officials, originally thought that he could wear a cast and play the following week against the Raiders.
McNeil underwent surgery Monday to install a plate to stabilize the broken right forearm he suffered during Sunday's loss.
"My understanding is that they would like to think that he will have a chance in a couple of weeks to play with a cast," Schottenheimer said. "It all depends on the amount of discomfort that he experiences."
