Chargers Report Card

Celebration Time! (Allsport)

The players held each other accountable during the week and responded with a team effort in a win against San Francisco.

QUARTERBACKS- Drew Brees had a career day. Career highs in passing yards with 336, completions with 29 and attempts with 50 and he spread the ball around to eight different receivers. Minus a pass he under threw Stephen Alexander that was intercepted in the end zone he had a fabulous day and proved he can lead this team in the most important stats, a victory. Grade: B+

RUNNING BACKS- LaDainian Tomlinson rushed for 57 yards in the second half and 88 yards for the game. He came up with some big runs and his second half play opened up play-action-pass for Brees. Tomlinson also caught 8 balls out of the backfield. Fullback Fred McCrary caught a touchdown pass and provided good locking throughout the game. Grade: B

RECEIVERS- Curtis Conway had yet another stellar day catching seven balls for 152 yards. Tim Dwight still is fighting the dropsies but contributed with five catches most of which were clutch. Reche Caldwell again caught a touchdown pass as he becomes a goal line favorite of Brees. Grade: B

OFFENSIVE LINE- The line was down two starters before the game and lost two more during the game. Justin Peelle almost played snaps at tackle with all the injuries. Still they did not allow a sack in 50 dropbacks and paved the way for 105 yards rushing against a great defense. Grade: A

DEFENSIVE LINE- Consistent pressure on Jeff Garcia only netted a half sack from this unit but they were able to contain Garcia and hold him to only three rushes. They were not as effective in stopping the running game but stopped Fred Beasley on a third and one, to force a field goal the first time Beasley has been stopped all year in that situation. Grade: C

LINEBACKERS- Orlando Ruff replaced Donnie Edwards and did a fine job. Junior Seau was as animated as ever and provided more than an emotional boost contributing 10 tackles. Grade: C

SECONDARY- Quentin Jammer had the day the Chargers envisioned when they drafted him. He contributed seven tackles and three passes defensed and did not seem to have a ball completed when thrown his way. Alex Molden got burned, and burned badly…twice. He was on coverage of Terrell Owens on both touchdown plays and was a few steps behind him each time. Molden did rebound to get a sack. Grade: C+

SPECIAL TEAMS- Steve Christie kicked the game winner in overtime, his second field goal of the day. He did have one blocked just before halftime though as special teams continues to struggle in some areas. Darren Bennett was stellar punting the ball dropping two punts inside the 20, and kicking for an average of 46.6 yards. Grade: B+

COACHING- Marty Schottenheimer motivated his team with the appeal of ‘Victory Monday' and the team responded. The playcalling was solid on both sides of the ball. Grade: B
