The San Diego Chargers and punter Mike Scifres have agreed on a four-year contract extension. He is expected to sign the new contract this week. Scifres’ current contract was due to expire following the ’07 season.
"We think we have a young guy with the talent to go to the Pro Bowl," general manager A.J. Smith said earlier this year.
Scifres is in his third NFL season and currently ranks sixth among the 32 team punters with a 39.1 net average.
Last year, he was named a first alternate to the AFC Pro Bowl squad after finishing the season ranked third in the NFL with a 38.4-yard net punting average.
"He is a weapon," head coach Marty Schottenheimer added.
