Four teams have expressed interest in San Diego Chargers left guard Toniu Fonoti and no AFC West…
Fonoti and Chargers at odds
With the deadline days away, the Chargers expect to complete a deal that will send Toniu Fonoti out of town. What was under speculation, until now, is the why? Past concerns were obvious. This year, apparently, he took his disregard for the team beyond what was acceptable. According to a league source with knowledge of the situation, Toniu Fonoti left practice without telling anyone where he was. "The team had no idea where he was," said the source. "He has to get permission to leave practice." Fonoti left of his own volition to have a second opinion on his broken hand. Considered a free-spirit, this is not uncommon behavior for the big man. Last year when he missed minicamp to attend a weight loss clinic in Houston he did not notify the team of his pending absence. He also missed the first day of training camp and the team explained that the dates to report were mixed up. "There are issues between Fonoti and the team that have not been resolved and all," said the source. It is believed that teams in playoff contention would be more likely to trade for Fonoti given his uncertain status at the end of the year, although some would like to see if he could be a building block for their team's rebuilding process. More on the Fonoti story HERE Lightning Quicks: Igor Olshansky will continue to be the third end in the defensive line rotation. They like him coming off the bench as a fresh body and are happy with the play of Jacques Cesaire and Luis Castillo. The Chargers would like to get Vincent Jackson playing time in the second half of the year. He is still essentially going through his training camp. The problem he will have in cracking the active roster is the play of special teams demon Kassim Osgood. The only guy in danger of not playing this week is cornerback Drayton Florence. Losing Florence would be a tremendous blow this week with Randy Moss coming to town. He would be the ideal choice to draw coverage of the big playmaker. Linebacker Steve Foley will continue to gut it out – no pun intended – with his strained abdomen. He is still in considerable pain and it will mean more time for Shaun Phillips and Shawne Merriman.
