The San Diego Chargers took the first major step in securing their future on Friday. They locked up AP Coach of the Year Marty Schottenheimer for an additional two years, running through 2007.

“The franchise took a giant step forward this past season,” Schottenheimer said.  “This success is a product of every person in the organization pulling together in the same direction.  I appreciate the opportunity to continue to build on what we’ve achieved together over the past three years.”

Marty Schottenheimer took over the head coaching duties in 2002 and started off the season with a 6-1 record before the Chargers dove to an 8-8 season.

In 2003, Schottenheimer led the team to a 4-12 record and their were rumors he might be ousted. The Chargers stuck with Schottenheimer and were rewarded when he led the team to a 12-4 record and their first home playoff game since 1994.

Unfortunately, the Bolts lost to the Jets in the first round of the playoffs.

“I’m extremely pleased and proud of Marty, his staff and the entire organization,” said Dean Spanos.  “They overcame a very difficult 4-12 season in 2003 and turned this franchise around.  I’m already looking forward to next season.”

“We’re all very proud of Coach and his staff and what this organization accomplished in 2004 and it’s important to make sure our football team keeps going in the right direction,” said General Manager A.J. Smith.  “Continuity is key for us right now.”

With Schottenheimer locked up, the team will turn its focus to the rest of the coaching staff. They would like to return a majority of the coaches that no longer have contracts.

Financial terms of the Schottenheimer deal were not available.
