Chargers sign LaFleur

Chargers add LaFleur

The San Diego Chargers signed free agent punter Bill LaFleur on Thursday. LaFleur punted for the San Francisco 49ers over the last two seasons. He was originally signed off the Chargers practice squad.

Bill LaFleur, 28, played in 21 games for the Niners averaging 38.7 gross and 34.9 net in 2003. He has a career average of 38.2 gross and 32.8 net.

Seventeen of LaFleur's 68 punts in 2003 fell inside the 20 yard line, good for 25 percent. Only three went into the end zone for a touchback.

Mike Scifres is the current Chargers punter. He was selected in the fifth round of the 2003 NFL Draft and the heir apparent to Darren Bennett who was released this offseason after a nine year stint in San Diego.

Scifres did not punt in 2003 as he handled only kickoffs but his role has expanded this offseason to include the placeholding duties. He was instrumental, along with David Binn, in the Bolts selection of Nate Kaeding. Scifres and Binn flew out to workout Kaeding for the rest of the staff.
