Steve Foley signed a three year deal to come to the Chargers on Thursday. The five year veteran began his career as a member Cincinnati Bengals after being picked in the third round of the 1998 NFL Draft.
The 6-3, 260 pound linebacker out of Louisiana-Monroe had 31 tackles last season with one sack and two passes defended. He played in 13 games, starting three contests at outside linebacker.
His best season came back in 2000 when he had 42 tackles, four sacks, one interception and seven passes defended. Foley suffered dislocated right shoulder in preseason game against New Orleans (8/24/2002) and was placed on injured reserve on 9/1/2002.
In college, Foley led nation in sacks with 18.5 in 1997.
The signing of Foley constitutes the first out of town acquisition for the team after signing David Binn to a five year deal on Wednesday. Foley is expected to net time as a backup in a rotating style 3-4 that the Chargers will deploy – despite being non-committal about the change in defensive philosophy.
