Tuttle joins the Chargers practice squad
An injury that has sent Vaughn Parker to the benches for the year has had a cascade effect on the roster. On Tuesday, Parker underwent surgery to repair the torn anterior cruciate and medial collateral ligaments in his left knee.
With Reche Caldwell out for seven plus weeks and Tim Dwight now listed as questionable, Dondre Gilliam was signed to the active roster by the San Diego Chargers.
Dondre Gilliam was sitting by the phone waiting for the Chargers to call. Gilliam has become familiar with the Chargers cutting him and resigning him at a later date. He went to camp with the Chargers in 2003 but was released on Aug. 26.
Gilliam was officially signed to the active roster in time for week 11 of the 2002 season. He spent the first 10 weeks of the season on the Chargers practice squad. He was released and resigned to the practice squad in a tumultuous week after getting his first playing time of his career.
Back in training camp he was the last receiver off the field on most days working with Cleo Lemon well after the rest of the team left the field. He concentrated on his route running and sideline caches. An injury in camp held him out for most camp, but he still managed to get himself on the field and run routes.
Prior to training camp, he spent the 2002 NFL Europe season with the Scottish Claymores, where he was the team’s leading receiver. Gilliam also went to training camp with the Chargers in 2001, but was released prior to the start of the regular season.
With the depth thin on the offensive line with the loss of Vaughn Parker for the season, Alex Tuttle, an undrafted free agent out of Northwest Missouri, was signed to the practice squad. Tuttle, 6-5, 305, spent training camp with the Chargers and was released on Aug. 26th.
Tuttle played right tackle and guard for the Chargers during camp. He was a two year starter at NW Missouri.
Despite fielding questions all week concerning the kicking game, the Chargers released kicker Mackenzie Hoambrecker, a rookie from Northern Iowa, to make room for Tuttle.
Hoambrecker kicked a 53 yard field goal during preseason, was cut in August, and signed to the practice squad a day after.
