Gerhart glad NFL teams have interest in him

Toby Gerhart is in the final year of his rookie contract with the Vikings, and a report that the Colts were interested in him at least lets him know there could be interest in the open market if he hits free agency in March.

The life of an NFL player is an interesting one.

Minnesota Vikings running back Toby Gerhart found out about a trade rumor involving him from his younger brother, who was in town to watch the Vikings' loss to the Cleveland Browns on Sunday.

According to a report on CBSSports.com, the Indianapolis Colts inquired about trading for Gerhart before they made their trade with the Browns to acquire 2012 first-round pick Trent Richardson last week.

"My little brother actually told me (about the report). It was actually (Sunday). He was up here for the game and we were driving after the game and he's like, ‘Man, CBS Sports or something reports that they contacted Minnesota about you,'" Gerhart said Monday in the locker room before heading out with the Vikings for their trip to London. "That's really the extent that I heard about it and that's all I heard about it. I try not to pay attention to that stuff. I'm here and happy to be here and try to help this team win."

According to the report, Colts general manager Ryan Grigson was interested in Gerhart and Detroit Lions RB Mikel Leshoure in addition to Richardson. He was looking to find running backs still in their rookie contract. Gerhart is in the final year of his rookie deal with the Vikings and scheduled to make $630,000 in base salary in addition to a $455,000 roster bonus.

Gerhart's reaction to the trade rumor?

"I was like, ‘Hey, man, at least some team might want me maybe down the road, potentially.' Like I said, I'm here and happy to be here and just try to help this team win and get in the win column," he said.

"I can't really focus on that stuff. I have a job. … I try not to pay attention to any of that stuff, just do what I can do – work out, contribute when I'm on the field and whatever happens, happens. It's a crazy business. Things can change in an instant so you never know."

Gerhart played with Colts quarterback Andrew Luck at Stanford and said he texted Luck after Indianapolis beat the San Francisco 49ers Sunday.

"I haven't heard from him (about the trade rumor). I just shot him a text yesterday after they beat the Niners and he just said thanks," Gerhart said. "There was nothing else besides that."
