As the Chiefs hit the practice field on Wednesday in preparation for their season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars at High Noon on Sunday, this game has to be considered a must win for the boys in red. In fact, I think Kansas City should play this game as if it’s already the post season.

The Kansas City Chiefs enter the 2013 season opener at Jacksonville against a very mediocre Jaguars team that on paper isn’t as good as their Sunday counterpart. The Chiefs, despite the fact they generally never play well in the state of Florida, should easily win this game.

Blessed with a new attitude, a roster overhaul and a few Super Bowl credentialed coaches, the Chiefs have a golden opportunity to make a statement with a victory in the Sunshine state on Sunday.

It’s clear the Chiefs have some issues to resolve but they're minimal compared to those of the Jaguars. Provided the offensive line can play at a high level, offensively the Chiefs have everything they need to be successful in regards to their passing and running attack.

In fact, based on the attacking style we saw in preseason; defensively the Chiefs are going to be a terrific unit. They have enough playmakers that at seasons end, I’d be shocked if they weren’t ranked in the top eight in the AFC.

The third wheel of the Chiefs engine, special teams, has been the star of the offseason. With Pro Bowl Punter, Dustin Colquitt, the steady right foot of kicker Ryan Succop and the return abilities of Dexter McCluster, Knile Davis and Quintin Demps, this unit might be the best the Chiefs have ever put on the field.

As you can probably gather, I’m more than giddy about this team right now. New Head Coach, Andy Reid and General Manger John Dorsey, have done a brilliant job building a roster of new players that blended very well with the talent leftover from the two previous regimes.

Granted, as expected with any new blood, the roster turnover has been significant. But the players, who had talent and fit the new culture in Kansas City for the most part, remained in place. In other words Reid and Dorsey had more than enough to work with to believe they can win in 2013.

In talking to a few NFL experts, scouts and pundits around the league, most believe the Chiefs are on the rise. In fact, some of my fellow NFL brethren have the Chiefs making the playoffs in January.

In itself that’s rather remarkable considering the Chiefs only won two games last year and seven the year before that.

But what happened then is simply in the Chiefs rear view mirror because of the stableness of the new leadership has brought to this franchise.

I’m not sure how many games the Chiefs will win this year. But I can tell you no matter the opponent, at home or on the road, Reid will have his players ready to do battle every Sunday.

However, one thing is certain Reid won’t take any opponent lightly including Sunday’s opponent the Jaguars. It’s that mindset in which that the Chiefs will never be in a position this year to be unprepared facing any of the teams on their 2013 schedule.

So that means the Chiefs teams of the past, who often rose or fell to the talent level on the other sidelines, probably won’t materialize under Reid. He won’t care if it’s home or on the road, better talent or not, his Chiefs team will be prepared to win.

With that, should Reid elevate that mindset from prepared to win to expected to win in short order, something special could be brewing in Kansas City by midseason.
