No Real Big Surprises in Chiefs Cuts

If we've learned anything from Chiefs General Manager, John Dorsey, we know KC's 53-man roster released on Saturday is anything but set in stone. Now the task ahead will be to tweak it just enough to be ready for there season opener against the Jacksonville Jaguars next Sunday.

By releasing 22 players including injured Tight End, Tony Moeaki, and talented un-drafted wide receiver, Rico Richardson, the Chiefs are now at the league-mandated limit of 53 players. But this roster is anything but set.

The Chiefs, with the first position on waiver claims, may still be looking for roster candidates. So those Chiefs that were on the bubble and made it under the roster wire Saturday, could have a rough 24 hours ahead hoping they stick.

The good news about the cuts made on Saturday afternoon confirms the Chiefs have done an outstanding job of sifting through a plethora of players they ran in and out of Kansas City since mid March.

Even though they've not played a single down yet, KC's 53-man roster is the most talented to open a season in a decade. The Chiefs have a few holes in regards to depth they could fill but hey are virtually two-deep at every position on the field. Furthermore, they've assembled a roster of football players that understand what it takes to play in the NFL and who have bought into Andy Reid's confidence that this team can win now.

But what's best about this 2013 roster to date, the Chiefs have playmakers on offense, defense and special teams. You'd have to go way back a decade or more to find an opening Chiefs day roster with this type of balance.

Still the proof of my belief won't show until the regular season begins. But the depth, talent and the entire roster has to play three games in a span of 18 days so they will be tested in short order.

Will everyone respond? Ask me after the Philadelphia Eagles Thursday night game.
