The Chargers suffered their first major injury of the 2013 season -- that didn't take long, did it? …
Chargers, Dwight Freeney Agree
Telesco reached back into his comfort zone in reeling in Dwight Freeney; the two spent more than a decade together with the Indianapolis Colts.
Freeney is an elite pass rusher with a vast array of moves, including a deadly spin maneuver. The question is how much he has left at age 33. But given San Diego's desperation in the wake of Ingram's injury, it was a risk the Chargers had to take.
The Chargers will tweak their 3-4 defense and design a package of plays built around Freeney's unique skill-set. He is not well suited to be a traditional 3-4 outside linebacker, as he showed last season during his first deployment in that alignment (12 tackles, five sacks).
Freeney will play mostly in passing situations while 2009 first-rounder Larry English handles the bulk of the dirty work (health willing) on first and second downs.
Veteran anchor and run-stopping stalwart Jarret Johnson will start on the opposite side. Former Carolina Panthers DE Thomas Keiser -- signed earlier this week -- and sixth-round pick Tourek Williams will also fight for time in the rotation.
Are you happy with the addition of Freeney? Discuss inside the message boards.
