Hanik Milligan, a hard hitting safety out of Houston was signed by the Chargers today. He becomes the fifth draft pick to sign on the dotted line and will be in training camp on time when it begins July 22nd in Carson.
Milligan was chosen in the sixth round with the 188th pick overall and was the fourth defensive back chosen by the Chargers in the draft.
Milligan was a first team All-Conference selection as a senior after leading Houston with 145 tackles, also posting 1 interception and breaking up 7 passes.
He amassed 174 tackles, one interception and 4 pass defensed as a junior after 87/5/8 the prior year.
Started three years for the Cougars after transferring from Garden City Community College and averaged over 128 tackles each year while causing 9 fumbles over the course of his collegiate career.
“I think he has a lot of potential, I think he will do well there,” said ex-Houston defensive coordinator Dick Bumpas. “He is a very dedicated young man, football is very important to him and he has demonstrated obvious skills and he is good at what he does.”
“During spring drills, Milligan was a step or two behind a few receivers when placed in coverage,” said Denis Savage. “On the other hand, he really looked good when the ball was in front of him. He quickly made breaks on the ball in pass coverage and showed nice ability to read running plays. Rarely when he faced front, as a true safety, did he misdiagnose a play.”
