The Chargers have signed fifth-round draft pick Mike Scifres, a punter and kickoff specialist from Western Illinois, to a five-year contract.
The most prolific punter in school history, Scifres was the 149th overall selection in the 2003 NFL Draft. He set a school record by averaging 43.5 yards per punt while amassing 205 punts for 8,908 yards in his career. Scifres also excelled as a kickoff specialist and served as a holder on placements and field goals.
Scifres is the third Chargers draft pick to sign, joining tackle Courtney Van Buren (Arkansas-Pine Bluff, third round) and fullback Andrew Pinnock (South Carolina, seventh).
The Chargers have five unsigned draft picks: cornerbacks Sammy Davis (Texas A&M, first round) and Drayton Florence (Tuskegee, second), safety Terrence Kiel (Texas A&M, second), linebacker Matt Wilhelm (Ohio State, fourth) and safety Hanik Milligan (Houston, sixth).
